Virginia Sets New Tourism Record in 2023

Share

Virginia’s tourism industry hit a milestone in 2023, with visitor spending reaching a record $33.3 billion, a nearly 10% increase from 2022. This impressive growth is attributed to Virginia’s diverse attractions, unique destinations, and strategic economic policies revitalizing the tourism sector. Governor Glenn Youngkin highlighted tourism’s essential role in Virginia’s economy, contributing significantly to job creation and community vibrancy.

In 2023, tourism directly supported over 224,000 jobs, marking a rise of over 13,000 from the previous year and restoring employment to 93% of pre-pandemic levels. Travelers spent an average of $91 million daily, generating $2.4 billion in state and local tax revenue, a 9% increase from 2022. Overnight visitors increased by 1.4 million, totaling 43.6 million and nearly reaching pre-pandemic levels.

All five visitor spending categories—recreation, transportation, lodging, food and beverage, and retail—have fully recovered and surpassed pre-pandemic levels. Recreation saw the highest growth, up 12% from 2022 and 24% beyond pre-pandemic levels. Transportation followed closely, increasing by 11% and contributing the largest share of visitor spending at 30%, thanks to major gateway airports like Washington Dulles International and Reagan National. Lodging spending grew by 9%, exceeding 2019 by 13%, driven by a balance of business, group, and leisure travel demand.

Secretary of Commerce and Trade Caren Merrick emphasized the positive impact of tourism on Virginia’s economy and quality of life, noting that visitor spending saves each Virginia household $955 in state and local taxes. Rita McClenny, President and CEO of Virginia Tourism Corporation, celebrated the resilience and appeal of Virginia as a premier travel destination. The success of 2023 sets a strong foundation for continued growth, supported by VTC’s commitment to promoting Virginia’s unique offerings.

This record-breaking achievement underscores the strategic efforts to enhance Virginia’s tourism industry and its crucial role in economic prosperity, job creation, and community development. As Virginia continues to attract visitors with its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and vibrant communities, the tourism sector is poised for further growth in the coming years.
