Terry Fischer, Chair of the ABA Board of Directors

As I look back on my first year as Chair of the American Bus Association (ABA) Board of Directors, I am humbled and inspired by our journey together. This year has been pivotal for the ABA, filled with significant milestones, critical transitions, and collective progress in navigating challenges while seizing new opportunities.

Major Milestones in 2024

2024 began on a high note with the ABA Marketplace in Nashville. This event marked a return to pre-pandemic attendance levels, a clear indicator of recovery and resilience in our industry. The Marketplace is not just a cornerstone event for ABA; it’s a vital source of revenue that enables us to carry out critical initiatives, such as our robust Government Affairs program. Seeing the energy, connections, and business deals happening on the floor reinforced the enduring importance of this flagship event.

Another landmark achievement was the appointment of Fred Ferguson as ABA’s new CEO following Peter Pantuso’s retirement after an illustrious 28-year tenure. Leading the search committee for Peter’s successor was an immense responsibility. Still, it was made smoother by the professionalism of the search firm we partnered with and the dedication of our committee members. Fred’s impressive public policy and strategic communications background make him an excellent fit to lead ABA into its next chapter. His Capitol Hill experience brings fresh perspectives and strategic advantage to our advocacy efforts, and I am excited to see his vision shape ABA’s future.

Challenges and ABA’s Resilience

The bus and travel industry experienced a robust recovery post-COVID, but 2024 brought new hurdles, including inflationary pressures and escalating costs. These fluctuations have strained businesses across the sector. One area where ABA has remained steadfast is in its advocacy for CERTS tax relief. While the conversation around COVID-related relief has waned, our team continues to work tirelessly to keep this issue on the agenda with policymakers.

Another pressing challenge is the push for electrification of motorcoaches, spurred by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) mandates. While the industry is not opposed to this direction, the lack of infrastructure and viable solutions presents a substantial obstacle. ABA has taken a proactive stance, engaging with government agencies to highlight the real-world implications of these initiatives on our members. We are advocating for a balanced approach that supports innovation without jeopardizing the stability of our industry.

Strengthening Advocacy and Policy Initiatives

Advocacy has always been at the heart of ABA’s mission, and this year, we’ve bolstered our efforts in meaningful ways. Fred Ferguson’s expertise, combined with the addition of Callie Hoyt as our new Vice President of Government Affairs, has reinvigorated our advocacy platform. Their Capitol Hill experience equips ABA with deeper insights into legislative processes and enhances our ability to navigate the complexities of policymaking.

From engaging directly with lawmakers to providing detailed policy briefs, ABA has amplified its voice on critical issues, ensuring our members’ concerns are heard and addressed. This momentum will be crucial as we continue to advocate for solutions that support our industry’s long-term success.

Innovation and Member Growth

In response to evolving industry trends, ABA has focused on fostering growth and innovation among its members. The Marketplace is a prime example, offering unparalleled opportunities for buyers and sellers to connect, exchange ideas, and create lasting partnerships. ABA’s councils also provide invaluable platforms for members to collaborate, share best practices, and engage with experts on pressing industry topics.

Looking ahead, there’s significant potential to enhance our membership offerings by addressing the diverse needs of our community. Each segment has unique goals and challenges, from bus operators to travel industry partners. ABA is committed to tailoring its value proposition to serve these distinct groups more effectively.

Priorities for 2025: Building on Momentum

As we approach 2025, developing a new strategic plan is at the forefront of our agenda. This plan will define our priorities and guide our efforts to deliver greater value to our members. Here are the key focus areas I envision for the coming year:

1. Government Affairs & Policy Advocacy
Our advocacy efforts must evolve to address emerging challenges and opportunities. This includes increasing grassroots engagement, raising public awareness about industry issues, and shifting ABA into a more proactive, offensive stance. Educating the next generation about the importance of our industry and fostering their involvement will also be critical to sustaining our momentum.

2. Membership Growth and Inclusion
Expanding membership and diversifying our member base is essential for ABA’s continued success. We need to understand better why particular groups, such as state tourism organizations and international tour operators, are underrepresented in our membership and address those gaps. By enhancing our value proposition and demonstrating the tangible benefits of ABA membership, we can attract a broader audience, including indirect stakeholders like restaurants, airlines, and cruise lines.

3. Enhancing Marketplace
The Marketplace remains a cornerstone of ABA’s activities, and our goal is to preserve its exceptional performance while driving growth. This includes increasing attendance, particularly among buyers, and expanding sponsorship opportunities. Promoting the value of council meetings and educational sessions at Marketplace will also help members see the benefits of the event.

4. Strengthening Communications
Precise, targeted communication is vital for engaging our members and stakeholders. ABA must continue to refine its messaging to address the specific needs of its diverse audiences, including state and federal legislators. Highlighting the association’s achievements and value propositions will help strengthen member loyalty and support.

5. Elevating the ABA Foundation
The ABA Foundation supports our advocacy efforts through research and data. Expanding the Foundation’s initiatives will enhance our ability to provide compelling evidence for our policy priorities, further solidifying ABA’s position as a trusted industry leader.

Resilience and Unity

Reflecting on 2024, I am grateful for the dedication and passion of our members, staff, and leadership team. Together, we have achieved remarkable progress while laying the groundwork for a brighter future.

The challenges we face as an industry are complex, but our resilience and unity give me great confidence in our ability to overcome them. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and look forward to working with all of you to advance the mission of ABA.

Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment to our shared vision. Here’s to a successful and transformative 2025!
