ABA and UMA Urge Commerce Department to Exempt Motorcoach Parts from New Tariff Proposal

ABA and the United Motorcoach Association (UMA) have submitted a joint letter to the U.S. Department of Commerce expressing strong opposition to proposed Section 232 tariffs on medium- and heavy-duty truck parts, citing serious unintended consequences for the motorcoach industry.
Although the investigation primarily targets the trucking sector, the associations warn that roughly 50% of the affected parts are used in intercity and charter bus operations. Imposing tariffs on these components would drive up maintenance costs, hinder safety innovation, and reduce service access—particularly in rural and underserved communities.
The letter urges the Department to exclude motorcoach-relevant parts from any final action, emphasizing that no motorcoaches are manufactured in the U.S. and that the domestic industry relies on an integrated international supply chain supported by American workers.
ABA and UMA offered to work with federal officials as the investigation proceeds, stressing the importance of protecting both national security and the economic viability of small businesses and passenger transportation providers.
