Scam Warning: New Data Email Phishing Attempt

Share

Thanks to a tip from Salt Lake Express, a new email phishing scam appears to be circulating. The email requests urgent information verification and provides a link for the recipient to log in and verify their member information. It has the ABA logo included to give it a veneer of authenticity.

Phishing emails can appear legitimate but are designed to steal passwords, financial data, or personal details. Here are some quick tips to help you stay safe:

  • Verify the SenderBe cautious of emails from unknown senders or those with slight misspellings in their addresses. If in doubt, contact the company directly using official contact information. The screenshot above shows that the sender’s email does not come from an ABA domain.
  • Look for Red Flags—Poor grammar, urgent demands, or unexpected attachments are warning signs. Legitimate organizations rarely ask for sensitive information via email. In the screenshot above, the sender forces a 24-hour time limit before “revocation of license.”
  • Hover Over Links—Before clicking on any link, hover over it to see the actual destination URL. If it looks suspicious or doesn’t match the supposed sender, don’t click.
  • Never Share Personal Information—Banks, government agencies, and reputable companies like ABA will never ask for sensitive data like passwords or Social Security numbers via email.
  • Report Suspicious Emails—If you receive a similar email, report it immediately to your IT team or email provider; do not click on any links within.
