As I reflect on my first year leading the American Bus Association, I’m filled with optimism about where we’ve been and where we’re headed. Together, we’ve laid a strong foundation for ABA’s next century—one built on advocacy, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to our members.
This past year, we deepened our impact through the ABA Foundation, increasing member contributions by 30 percent. These funds have expanded scholarships for the next generation of industry leaders, fueled research that informs our policy work, and will expand our efforts in the fight against human trafficking. This growth speaks to the generosity of our members and the culture of purpose we’re building together.
In 2024, motorcoaches provided an astounding 40.3 billion passenger miles—up 6 percent from the prior year.
Our industry’s resilience is also reflected in the numbers. In 2024, motorcoaches provided an astounding 40.3 billion passenger miles—up 6 percent from the prior year. This growth reaffirms what we already know: motorcoach travel continues to be an essential, safe, and efficient way to connect people with places.
In a major moment, our Board of Directors adopted the ABA Strategic Plan. Built around four core pillars—Advocacy, Operations & Safety, Workforce, and Marketplace—the plan charts a path for expanded success. It also establishes five core promises to our members:
1. Advocate for a favorable business and regulatory environment.
2. Grow and connect the North American bus and group travel market.
3. Advance knowledge, professional development, and partnerships.
4. Boost consumer engagement with motorcoach travel.
5. Ensure ABA’s sustained growth and leadership.
We’re already delivering on these promises. This year, we launched the first-ever ABA Policy Agenda—a clear roadmap to advance domestic and group travel while ensuring a fair regulatory environment for our operators. We also released the inaugural ABA Sustainability and Innovation Report, underscoring that motorcoach travel is the most sustainable mode of transportation available today.
We’ve also worked to amplify voices across the broader travel ecosystem. Through the formation of the Beyond Borders Tourism Coalition, we’ve united smaller travel associations to speak with one powerful voice. Together, we’ve engaged Congress and the Executive Branch, earning media attention across the country for the issues that matter most to our members.
ABA Marketplace 2025 marked another high point. It was the largest Marketplace in our history—proof that our industry’s momentum is strong and accelerating.
Throughout the year, we’ve focused on maximizing member value—reducing costs, reallocating resources, and expanding services to support your success.
Looking ahead, the future is bright. We’re updating ABA’s brand to reflect our position as the most influential voice in group and ground transportation. And as ABA celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026 amid a mega-decade of travel events, motorcoaches will take center stage—connecting people with all the amazing destinations across North America.
With growing membership, increasing political influence, and undeniable momentum, we’re well-positioned to make motorcoach travel the preferred way to move—and I can’t wait to see what we accomplish together in the year ahead.
Sincerely,
FRED FERGUSON
