The Museum of Appalachia has released its 2026 calendar of special events, outlining a year of programming dedicated to celebrating the history, traditions, and living culture of Southern Appalachia. The lineup features a mix of signature fundraisers, student-focused educational experiences, and seasonal community celebrations held on the museum’s historic grounds in Norris, Tennessee.

The 2026 season begins on February 27 with Heroes of Southern Appalachia, a dinner and awards ceremony honoring individuals whose lives and work reflect the spirit and heritage of the region. The 2026 honorees are Sam and Ann Furrow, recognized for their contributions to preserving and elevating Appalachian history and culture.

Spring programming continues with Sheep Shearing Days on April 24 and May 1. Designed for students and families, the event explores how early Appalachian settlers transformed wool into clothing. Visitors can expect hands-on activities, demonstrations, and immersive learning experiences led by artisans, educators, and musicians.

The museum’s signature fundraising event, the annual Barn Dance, is scheduled for June 19. The evening includes a Southern dinner, live and silent auctions, square dancing, and a community celebration in support of the museum’s mission to preserve Appalachian heritage.

Independence Day weekend programming takes place on July 3 and 4, including the Independence Day Anvil Shoot Celebration. This historic tradition, once used by pioneers to mark important occasions, involves launching gunpowder-filled anvils into the sky. The 2026 event will feature enhanced programming developed in partnership with TN250, Tennessee’s official commemoration of the nation’s 250th anniversary, highlighting the state’s Revolutionary-era history and contributions.

Fall Heritage Days return October 22, 23, 29, and 30, offering student-focused programming that showcases the sights, sounds, and traditions of the fall harvest season in Southern Appalachia. The event features dozens of pioneer artisans, musicians, and hands-on demonstrations across the museum grounds.

The year concludes with Candlelight Christmas on December 11 and 12. The event features evening tours of the museum’s illuminated pioneer village, along with live music, seasonal storytelling, pioneer demonstrations, and interactive activities for children.

In addition to these significant events, the Museum of Appalachia will offer weekly programming from spring through fall, including live traditional music, artisan demonstrations, and opportunities to meet animals. Additional special events may be announced throughout the year. Updates and event details are available at museumofappalachia.org.
