How to be a STAR at ABA Marketplace
Tips and secrets from this year's Marketplace co-chairs
First time heading to the American Bus Association Marketplace? Oh, you’re in for a ride—pun fully intended. As a STAR delegate, you’re not just showing up to book business (though that’s definitely part of it). You’re here to make connections, find your rhythm, and yes—add a little sparkle to the whole experience.
Let’s talk about that sparkle, actually. One of my favorite things to do is dress up my name badge with ribbons. You’ll find them at the registration desk, and as a STAR, you’re totally entitled to one. Rock it proudly! It’s like a secret handshake for newbies—seasoned attendees spot it and instantly go, “Ah, you’re new! Let me show you the ropes.” The more I got involved over the years, the longer my ribbon chain grew. And funny enough, that often sparked conversations with people I wouldn’t have met otherwise. Danielle, by the way, swears by her sparkly shoes. Not only do they match the vibe, but they’re also a great icebreaker. People always notice.
Now, about shoes—style is fun and all, but trust me, comfort wins. You’re going to walk a lot. I mean, a lot. I always wear comfy sneakers to the convention center and swap into something a little dressier once I get to my booth or table. And switching up your shoes day-to-day? Game changer. Your feet will thank you.

One of the best ways to grow your network is surprisingly simple—sit with someone new at breakfast or lunch. It’s easy to default to familiar faces, but take the chance. Look for someone else with a STAR ribbon, or maybe someone with a fun accessory, and just say hey. Some of the best connections I’ve made in this industry started with, “Mind if I sit here?” It’s that easy.
Also, bring a phone charger. You’ll need it. There’s a charging station on the business floor (thanks, North Dakota Tourism!) and another on the networking floor (Visit Richmond’s got your back). But don’t just recharge your phone—recharge yourself. I’ve made it a mission to swing by the snackiest booths: Wisconsin for cheese, Branson for ice cream, Mackinac Island for fudge, and Texas for Dr. Pepper. It’s a delicious way to stay fueled and friendly.
Hydration is key, too. I bring a refillable water bottle and usually top it off at the hotel in the morning—because I’m an ice person. There’s a water station on the business floor if you need a midday refill. And if you’re like me and need a moment of quiet now and then, find a calm corner. Volunteering at the Education Sessions is my little oasis. It gets a bit busy right before and after sessions, but in between? Peaceful. It’s a nice way to be helpful while sneaking in a little breather.
Oh—and don’t skip the evening events. Seriously. They’re some of the most memorable parts of ABA. You’ll get to experience the host city in style, meet more people, and let loose a little. There’s plenty of time to sleep later!
So pack your sparkle, lace up those comfy shoes, and bring your best self. Reno’s waiting. See you there!
