Governor Josh Green, M.D., together with legislative leaders, recently unveiled a freshly reorganized advisory board for the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA), comprising 12 individuals chosen to steer the state’s tourism strategy toward sustainability, accountability, and community-centered values.
The new advisory board emerges in the wake of the prior board’s resignation earlier this summer—an initiative prompted by Governor Green to realign HTA’s governance with broader state priorities. “Because Hawaiʻi is one of the world’s most desirable visitor destinations, tourism is a main economic driver for our islands,” said Governor Green in a statement. “We’re starting fresh, rebuilding trust and ensuring our tourism decisions reflect our values, our communities and a sustainable future for our people and island home.”
Introducing Terry Fischer
Among those appointed is Terry Fischer, president and owner of Polynesian Adventure Tours in Hawai’i, as well as president of California-based Transportation Charter Services and Royal Coach Tours, who brings nearly four decades of expertise in tour operations across the U.S. and Canada. Fischer also currently serves as the Chair of ABA’s Board of Directors.
In his role, Fischer represents the transportation sector as well as entities deeply impacted by tourism—an essential voice for ensuring that HTA’s strategic decisions consider both industry realities and visitor experience. According to HTA’s official governance structure, his appointment aligns with the requirement for a member from a tourism‑impacted entity and underscores representation across sectors crucial to destination management.
A Diverse and Strategic Line-Up
The full roster combines reappointed voices with fresh perspectives:
- Reappointed members include hospitality and nonprofit leaders like Kimberly Agas (Aulani Resort GM), James McCully (orchid breeder and former HTA board member), Lisa Paulson (CEO, Maui Food Bank), and Christian West (ILWU Local 142 president).
- New appointees bring industry, cultural, and community credentials—Leah Belmonte (HR leader), Mericia Elmore (SAG‑AFTRA Hawai‘i local), Joel Guy (House Speaker’s appointee and nonprofit director), Troy Lazaro (Kumu hula and cultural steward), Danny Ojiri (Senate President’s appointee, Outrigger Hospitality VP), Lanai Tabura (entertainer and cultural advocate), and Linda Wong (World of Aloha executive).
Speaker Nadine K. Nakamura highlighted the importance of a board that “balances economic growth with community benefit.” At the same time, Senator Lynn DeCoite emphasized sustainability, cultural preservation, and transparency as guiding principles for the HTA’s refreshed leadership.
Looking Ahead
Members appointed by the Governor, including Fischer, will be subject to confirmation by the state Senate. The new board structure aims to introduce a more collaborative, transparent, and culturally grounded approach to managing Hawaiʻi’s lifeblood industry.
