Express Way: Michigan’s Captivating Castle

Step back in time and discover the fairy-tale charm of Castle Farms

Share

Castle Farms, a historic gem built in 1918 by Albert Loeb, the acting president of Sears, Roebuck and Co., offers a unique experience for group tours. Originally established as Loeb Farms, this French Normandy-style castle in Charlevoix, Mich., was Loeb’s dream of creating the world’s best farm, utilizing Sears products. The farm quickly gained fame for its dairy production and innovative techniques, setting world records.

Over time, Castle Farms evolved into a cultural landmark, serving as an artist mecca and concert venue. In 2001, the current owner, Linda Mueller, acquired the property and began an ambitious restoration project. Using original blueprints provided by the Loeb family descendants, Linda and her team meticulously restored the castle to its former glory, preserving its historical integrity while enhancing its charm.

Tram rides complement guided tours of the Castle Farms property during the Northern Michigan summer season.

Whether groups are drawn by the history, gardens, railroad, or collections, a visit to Castle Farms is sure to be a highlight of any Northern Michigan itinerary.

Norm the dragon is made entirely from recycled metal materials and stands guard over the castle.

The model railroad winds through the towers and gardens of Castle Farms, covering more than 2,000 feet of track.

Today, Castle Farms is a premier destination for weddings, special events, and daily historical tours. The estate features 10 beautifully landscaped gardens, each with a unique array of flowers that bloom throughout the season, providing a stunning backdrop for visitors.

One of the most captivating aspects of Castle Farms is the 1918 Museum, located in the restored Blacksmith Shop. This World War I museum showcases items from the Sears, Roebuck & Co. catalog, complete with original advertising pages, alongside local WWI memorabilia. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, highlighting the innovations and lifestyle of the early 20th century.

A standout attraction is Michigan’s largest garden railroad, where model trains run on over three-quarters of a mile of track. The display includes a model of the Pere Marquette train, once used by the Loeb family, weaving through a hedge maze and around the gardens. This intricate display is a delight for guests of all ages.

Castle Farms also features a variety of unique collections, including items from castles worldwide, metalwork forged on-site by the second owner, concert memorabilia, a reflection pond, life-sized chess sets, and even a dragon. These attractions make Castle Farms one of Northern Michigan’s top historic sites, conveniently located just 50 miles south of Mackinaw.

For those interested in exploring the castle’s rich history and beauty, guided tours offer an immersive experience. Knowledgeable guides share exclusive stories of the castle and its four owners, leading visitors through magnificent stone buildings that have stood for over a century. The formal gardens, inspired by French and English royalty, offer a serene environment for exploration.

The tour also includes access to museum-quality collections, the state’s largest outdoor model railroad, and a tram ride through the expansive, handicap-accessible grounds. For an added touch, groups can enjoy a wine tasting at 1918 Cellars, the castle’s on-site winery.
