Motor Coach Industries Recalls Nearly 16,000 Buses Over Safety Glass Issue
An issue with lower curb-view glass glazing is being addressed.
Motor Coach Industries (MCI) has issued a major safety recall affecting nearly 16,000 of its charter and transit buses due to a problem with the front door’s lower curb-view glass. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the glazing material used in this section of the bus does not meet federal safety standards. It could pose a visibility hazard to drivers.
The recall includes a wide range of MCI models:
102DL3, 102D3, MC12PTV, E4500, D4000, 102D3ISTV, D4500, J4500, D4000ISTV, D4005, D4505, and J3500.
Affected vehicles span multiple model years; owners are advised to consult the official recall report for detailed information on specific buses.
The issue centers on noncompliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 205, which covers glazing materials used in vehicle windows. In this case, the glass installed in the lower curb-view area of the front door does not meet the required specifications. This could impair a driver’s visibility—particularly when maneuvering in close quarters—raising the risk of an accident.
MCI has stated that it will replace the faulty glass at no cost to owners. Notification letters will begin mailing on January 6, 2026.
What Bus Operators and Owners Should Do Next:
- Check if your bus is affected: Review MCI’s official recall report via the NHTSA website for details on affected VINs and production years.
- Schedule a repair: Once notified, or if you suspect your vehicle is involved, contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947.
- Reference Recall Number: Mention Recall Number 22-005 when calling to help streamline your inquiry.
Until the issue is resolved, MCI recommends operators remain vigilant about visibility and use extra caution when navigating tight spaces or loading/unloading passengers.
