Improper solicitations from outside organizations are unfortunately common. While they may advertise lower rates, these offers can be misleading — reservations made through unaffiliated providers may:

  • Not be legitimate or secure

  • Or in some cases, be completely non-refundable

BISC Summer Meeting Brings Focus on Preparedness and Partnership

Ninety attendees, nine sessions, and a landmark security exercise highlight the Council’s ongoing commitment to motorcoach safety.

On Tuesday, August 19, and Wednesday, August 20, the Bus Industry Safety Council (BISC) held its summer—also referred to as mid-year—meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This important gathering brought together safety professionals, industry leaders, and government partners for two days of discussion, training, and collaboration on the issues most critical to motorcoach safety.

Our sincere thanks go to our valued sponsors and to the Minnesota Bus Operators Association (McBOA) for their hospitality and support in hosting this meeting. Attendance was strong, with approximately 90 participants joining us, including about 10 percent first-time attendees—a positive sign of growth and continued interest in BISC’s mission.

One of the highlights of the program was a four-hour tabletop Vehicle Ramming Exercise, led by Darrin McGreevy and his team from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This exercise focused on preparing for the serious scenario of a motorcoach being hijacked with the intent to cause harm by ramming into a crowd. The session proved to be both sobering and invaluable. Notably, six Greyhound drivers participated in the exercise, offering real-world operational insights that enriched the discussion and enhanced the outcomes. Their contributions underscored the importance of involving drivers directly in security preparedness. TSA and BISC’s long-standing partnership remains a cornerstone in advancing the safety and security of both the motorcoach industry and the traveling public.

In addition, the two-day event featured nine educational sessions. Highlights included a regulatory update from Cliff Wiley and Roger Lutz of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), a long-time partner of the industry, and an impactful presentation by Lexi Higgins of Trucking Against Trafficking (TAT), who shared how the motorcoach community can aid in the fight against human trafficking.

I extend my deepest thanks to the BISC executive team and to ABA’s Brandon Buchanan for their tireless work behind the scenes. Their efforts made this meeting a true success. I look forward to welcoming everyone to our Annual BISC Meeting in Reno, Nevada, on January 11–12, 2026.

Salvatore Caccavale is the Director of Safety at Martz Bus and the current chair of the Bus Industry Safety Council.
